You can always opt for a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid vehicle. However, if you prefer a model that runs strictly on gasoline, all hope is not lost. That’s why I decided to take a look at the midsize SUV that, according to Transport Canada, offers the lowest fuel consumption on the market in 2026.
Nissan Murano: 9.7 L/100 km
The Nissan Murano may seem relatively thirsty compared to most vehicles currently available on the market. However, it’s important to understand that electrification plays a role in the majority of cases. Take the Mazda CX-70, for example. It boasts a combined average fuel consumption of 9.5 L/100 km, but it benefits from a mild hybrid system. In the case of the Nissan Murano, there is no form of assistance. The vehicle is powered solely by a gasoline engine.
The Japanese automaker’s SUV is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque — a very popular setup in this segment and across the industry as a whole. So how is it that the Murano is the most fuel-efficient model in its class at the pump?
First, there’s aerodynamics. The Nissan Murano’s design was engineered to cut through the air, which helps reduce fuel consumption. Then, the new generation has finally replaced its V6 engine and CVT with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 9-speed automatic transmission, improving overall energy efficiency.
Most automakers focus on offering a wide variety of powertrains, and that’s where Nissan gains an edge over the competition. The Japanese brand may offer fewer engine options across its lineup, but each one is optimized to deliver the best possible efficiency. Ultimately, that’s what allows the Nissan Murano to stand out as the most fuel-efficient midsize SUV without any form of electrification in 2026.
